I came across this article as I continued my research about the brain, food and addiction.  And I felt like I had hit a jackpot!!  This is one of the most clear articles I have ever read and it fits perfectly with everything we say about EBT and food.  I just had to share it with all of you.

Briefly, this article is readable even to a non-scientific person.  And, it starts with the concept of non-homeostatic eating.  We spend a lot of time in EBT talking about homeostasis and allostasis and the importance of ridding your body of allostasis in order to function at your best homeostatic state.  And this article brings homeostasis to the idea of food and eating.
 
Here is the great part…it is not just about what you eat and how much.  The authors of this article present the four aspects of non-homeostatic eating.  “The four aspects are (1) the quantity of the commodity consumed, (2) the quality or type of commodity consumed, (3) the context in which the behavior occurs, and (4) the specific kind of behavior that is directed toward obtaining and consuming the commodity of interest.”
 
So yes, we know that what we eat and how much we eat are important.  But equally important and often forgotten is the context…are we eating as a social event?  Are we eating because we are stressed or angry or sad?  Are we eating because we are bored?  Are we eating in front of the television?  And also equally important is the behavior necessary to obtain and consume the food.  Are we eating in secret?  Do we have a supply of candy hidden under the mattress?  Are we open about our eating practices with other people?  Click here to be taken to the complete article.

I can’t answer all of these questions for you regarding your eating.  However, what I can say is that food is very important for homeostatic functioning of the mind and the body.   Eating in a homeostatic manner is very important.  And that requires a lot of integrity and honesty.  Keep up the hard work…a life at 1 is worth it.
