Knowing Your Brain State

Knowing how to identify your brain state is essential for those who are struggling with hypertension. Hypertension is the called the "silent killer" and often, those who are dealing with it have a "silent" emotional brain. They don't know they are stressed because their emotional brain responds to stress by shutting down, that is, decreasing feelings awareness and increasing focus on thoughts or actions. Many people do not know that they are stressed. Emotional brain literacy is essential.

The Basics

Hypertension impacts 29 percent of Americans, and treatment typically involves recommendations to change behavior – diet and exercise – and weight and to take anti-hypertension medications. Medications can be highly effective for the treatment of hypertension, however, other with new understandings from neuroscience, offers new options to support medication treatment.

The EBT Approach

Most people who experience hypertension have a cluster of stress symptoms. They may be overweight, or may find it difficult to motivate themselves to exercise. Some people have a drive to smoke or use alcohol to ease their stress. The goal of EBT is to move up the brain's set point to decrease the whole range of stress symptoms. Lifestyle changes that are included in EBT favor improved blood pressure, too.
